When spacing arms outward, I like to make sure there is at least 3/4 spindle insertion (3/4 of the arm's hole is filled with spindle). Notice too that old-school 401's have a stepped section on the drive boss that fits in a recess in a Flight sprocket, which may or may not be an issue if the arm was spaced away from the sprocket. With 401 cranks, you don't have the option of swapping out a longer spindle. I also used a longer spindle since I didn't like the amount of insertion (in the arm) that the shorter spindle had. The Flight bottom bracket/spindle we are talking about doesn't have much adjustability and was originally designed when frames weren't beefy in the chain stays. Notice how beefy your chain stays are on that aluminum frame (and how they curve outward for tire clearance). I have a 80's non-dimple threaded Flight spindle handy - it measures 5.07" long and is also hollow. If I remember correctly, the spindles were solid? The problem is my spindle is 5.08" long unlike the normal spindle length I'm used to of 5.25" Why is this spindle shorter? Additionally the spindle is hollow.
